💬 100 Interview Q&As »
There are two reasons why interviewers ask this interview question. They are curious if you learn and keep up with the industry outside of work AND how you are as a person. Structure your answer based on your genuine interests (show the human side), company culture and the job role.
#1 Example Answer
“I spend most of my days in front of a computer, so in my spare time I enjoy going out for a run in central park. Actually, I’m using this smartwatch to track my progress and follow a keto diet to lose weight so I’ll be prepared for the New York City Marathon next month. I’m curious about what I’m capable of achieving.
I also like to read self-development books focussed on productivity. Currently, I’m reading Franklin Covey’s book: “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, to learn more about personal and interpersonal growth. It’s quite remarkable how these books can help me lead my life in a truly effective way.”
#2 Example Answer
“In my spare time, I enjoy playing the Spanish guitar. I taught myself how to play the instrument by undertaking online tutorials ever since I was 15 years old. Since then, I have participated in bands and performed many times in local pubs in [City].
Nowadays, I don’t perform on stage anymore because I like to allocate more time to reading and taking care of my 5-year old dog. I have just finished reading Ryan Holiday’s book entitled: “The Daily Stoic”. It’s a great read because it taught me to schedule reflection into my days.”
TIPS
√ Do promote the conversation between you and the interviewer. Instead of going back-and-forth (question-answer-question-answer), it’s important to talk about hobbies or interests that you are really passionate about. That way, you can enhance the interview experience.
X Do avoid boring and generic answers such as: “I like to travel“, “I like to drink with friends” or “I like to watch series on Netflix“. Without further explanation, these are meaningless to the interviewer. For example, if you like to workout, you can share how many times you go to the gym, if you follow a fitness plan or perhaps you do cardio for an upcoming marathon.
