#1 Example Answer
“Well, I’d rather keep this information private since employee salaries are considered to be confidential at [Company XYZ]. However, if we move forward in the hiring process, I can provide you with a wide salary range, OR, if you feel comfortable sharing the salary for this position at your company, I can confirm or decline if my current salary is within that range. I hope you understand my situation.”
#2 Example Answer
“I’d rather keep this information private, but my current salary range is in between [A] & [B]. I do, however, want to emphasize my need for higher compensation based on the experience and skills I’ve developed over the past few years. In addition, this open position requires some additional responsibilities such as [Task 1] and [Task 2]. So I am open to discussing salary, bonus and other benefits for this job role.”
TIPS
√ Do give a wide salary range based on similar positions, industry data and region.
X Don’t disclose your current salary to keep the upper hand in the salary negotiation.
