💬 100 Interview Q&As »
The reason why interviewers ask this question is to find out if the candidate made a conscious decision and is genuinely passionate about the major. To structure your answer, share why the major fits your skills and interest, and how your previous experience (e.g. internship) and passion can contribute to the job role.
Example Answer
For job seekers that picked a RELATED major
“The reason why I chose to major in [Finance] is because I’m really into financial modeling. Besides the intellectually stimulating aspect, I really like to calculate cost-effective ways to allocate corporate resources and decide on budgets. I also noticed that the financial industry is driven by technology. The idea of constant innovation and progress appeals to me and opens many opportunities for career growth.”
Example Answer
For job seekers that picked an UNRELATED major
“Initially, I was interested in majoring in [Medical Assisting], but I chose to major in [Communication Sciences] because I thought a broad field of study rather than something super niche would be the safest option as it would keep all my options open. In hindsight, it would have been better to specialize in healthcare because it nurtures my genuine desire to help others while earning a living. However, I do think that my educational background contributes to effective communication with patients and coworkers.”
TIPS
√ Do show signs of excitement, energy and passion. The interviewer would like to see a spark or that you light up when they ask you this interview question.
√ Do emphasize the qualifications that relate to the job requirements. For example, if you majored in communication sciences but are applying for a job in healthcare, then you can emphasize how your background contributes to effective communication with patients and coworkers.
X Don’t say: “Well, I wasn’t sure what to do so I just chose this major.” OR “I only had to attend a couple of extra classes so that’s why I pursued a double major.” Employers want to see candidates that are genuinely intrigued and passionate about the course material. However, if you actually regret specializing in a particular field, you should explain why.
X Don’t say: “Because of financial reasons.” Employers are looking for candidates with intrinsic motivation rather than those moved by rewards. Reason being, candidates that are genuinely intrigued and passionate about the course material are more likely to stay for the long-term.
